Once mappers created accounts for both HOT and OSM, they could begin contributing to a project. Volunteer mappers can help build a community map by dedicating time tracing satellite images, which are later validated and then labeled by local teams in those locations.Īndy Rutkowski from the USC Library and Laura Loyola from the USC Spatial Sciences Institute offered training on the technical aspects of HOT. To start off the Mapathon, UCLA Political Geography Ph.D candidate, James Walker, talked about the purpose of volunteering with HOT. #Global mapper 11 blogspot free#On the first day, participants tackled the challenge of digitizing 20,000 buildings on OpenStreetMap (OSM), a crowd-sourced and free world map that is open for editing by the public. A majority were students, yet faculty, post-docs, staff, etc. With most of the participants coming from UCLA and USC, other mappers were welcomed as well. įigure 2: This graph represents the Mapathon community. In the span of two days, mappers exceeded this goal, all while meeting new people, learning about data science, and having fun!įigure 1: The areas highlighted in yellow represent places where participants were located during the Mapathon, including the following countries: American Samoa, Brazil, Canada, China, Colombia, Germany, Greece, India, Mali, Nigeria, Taiwan, United States. The goal of this Mapathon was to come together as a community–with a little friendly rivalry, of course–to digitize a total of 20,000 buildings, contributing spatial data that aids in real time disaster management, reduce risks, and contribute to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Many mappers were affiliates of UCLA or USC, however others were welcomed as well (Figure 2). While many of the participants were located in North America during the event, people from Brazil, Nigeria, and even Singapore attended (Figure 1). The event ultimately concluded with a keynote by speaker Ben Welsh, editor of Data and Graphics at the Los Angeles (LA) Times. This year, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, UCLA and USC hosted the mapathon virtually, enabling 200 mappers with varying skill levels from around the world to map buildings and participate in workshops. 28 to 30, 2020, UCLA and the University of Southern California (USC) hosted the 4th Annual Humanitarian Mapathon, a mapping competition to support the Humanitarian OpenStreetMap Team (HOT). Shabby chic extends to the garden with the same principles of using timeworn iron and wicker garden furniture and accessories. From Oct. If a piece of old furniture does not quite fit, a fresh look can come from white paint and a little distressing. Furniture surfaces that show wear combine well with pieces of antique pottery, glass and silver hollow ware. Old cotton ticking, burlap and linen are just a small sample of the preferred textile accents. Antique pieces such as bead board cupboards, metal racks and containers, chippie white accents, all contribute to the ambiance. Less is more, natural comfort, and purity all add to the style. Furniture and accessories are either chosen for their appearance of age and signs of wear or newer items are distressed to achieve the appearance of age and use. Recycling and up-scaling old furniture and fabrics is an important aspect of the look. Defining "Shabby Chic" is as varied as our customers are: however, it tends to imply semi-sophisticated, warm, weathered, and comfortable.
